Islington Town Hall Wedding Photography | David & Zoe

A black tie London wedding at Islington Town Hall, followed by couple portraits around Islington, lunch at Frederick's and an evening reception at 1 Lombard Street.

A Black Tie London Wedding at Islington Town Hall

There is something great about photographing weddings in London. You can have a beautiful ceremony in a grand Town Hall, walk straight out into the streets of the city for portraits, have lunch somewhere completely different and then finish the day with a party on the other side of London.

That's exactly what David and Zoe did for their wedding on 19 September.

The day started at Islington Town Hall, with David arriving at 12:15pm and Zoe shortly afterwards at 12:20pm. The ceremony followed at 12:30pm.

It was a sunny September day and the black tie dress code worked perfectly with the character of the Town Hall. There was something really timeless about the combination of the architecture, the city and everyone dressed up for the occasion.

I photographed the wedding from the ceremony onwards, focusing on the moments happening around David and Zoe rather than turning the day into a photoshoot.

A Ceremony at Islington Town Hall

With the ceremony happening at 12:30pm, the time before it was short but full of anticipation.

David arrived first, followed by Zoe, and then everyone settled in for the ceremony.

One of the things I enjoy about Town Hall weddings is how quickly everything happens. There isn't necessarily hours of preparation before the ceremony or a huge amount of time spent moving between different rooms.

It makes the moments that are there feel even more important.

The ceremony itself was followed by congratulations, hugs and all those little reactions from friends and family that make a wedding gallery feel personal.

I'm always looking for those moments alongside the obvious ones. The glance between two people, a reaction from a guest or something happening in the background that you might not notice until you see the photograph afterwards.

That's a big part of my approach to wedding photography.

I want the photographs to feel like the day actually felt.

Couple Portraits Around Islington

After the ceremony, the guests headed to Frederick's for the wedding breakfast while David and Zoe and I walked separately through Islington for some couple portraits.

This is one of my favourite ways to photograph a London Town Hall wedding.

Rather than spending a long time taking formal photographs inside the Town Hall, we had some time together outside, walking through the surrounding streets and using the architecture and light around us.

It gave us a chance to create something a little more editorial while still keeping everything relaxed.

I don't want couple portraits to feel like a separate photoshoot that takes you away from your wedding for an hour.

A short walk, a little direction when needed and some time for the two of you to settle into it is usually enough.

And being in London gives you so much to work with.

The streets, buildings, light and movement of the city all become part of the photographs.

Lunch at Frederick's

While we were taking portraits, the rest of the guests headed to Frederick's on Islington High Street for the wedding breakfast.

David and Zoe had booked the private dining room from 12:30pm until 4:30pm, giving everyone plenty of time to sit down and enjoy the afternoon together.

After the ceremony and portraits, it was a completely different part of the day.

The formalities were over and everyone could relax.

This is usually where my photography becomes even more documentary. People stop thinking about the camera and start enjoying themselves properly.

Conversations, drinks, food, laughter and all the little interactions between friends and family become the focus.

Those photographs might not be the ones you planned before the wedding, but they're often the ones that bring the memories back most clearly.

From Islington to the City

After the afternoon at Frederick's, there was a break before everyone came back together for the evening.

The reception was at 1 Lombard Street in the City of London, starting at 6pm.

David and Zoe made their entrance at 6:30pm, bringing everyone back together for the evening celebrations.

I loved the contrast between the two parts of the day.

The afternoon had the relaxed feel of Islington, while the evening moved into the City with its grand architecture, streets and completely different atmosphere.

It's one of the things that makes London such a good place for weddings.

You're not limited to one venue or one backdrop.

You can get married at Islington Town Hall, walk through the streets for portraits, have lunch somewhere nearby and then head across London for the evening.

The city becomes part of the wedding rather than just the location around it.

Photographing a London Town Hall Wedding

My approach to weddings is a mixture of relaxed documentary photography and an editorial eye.

I want the photographs to feel natural and honest, but I also want them to look considered.

My background in fashion photography influences the way I look at light, composition and portraits, while the documentary side of my work means I'm just as interested in what happens when nobody is looking at the camera.

For a wedding like David and Zoe's, that balance works particularly well.

There are moments where I'll give a little direction, like during the couple portraits, but most of the day is about being present and paying attention.

The aim is for you to actually enjoy the wedding while I photograph what's happening around you.

Why I Love Islington Town Hall Weddings

Having photographed David and Zoe's wedding, I think Islington Town Hall works particularly well for couples who want a London wedding that feels stylish without being overly formal.

The Town Hall gives you the classic setting for the ceremony, but you're immediately surrounded by Islington once you walk outside.

That means the day can be completely your own.

You could have a small ceremony and dinner nearby, or do what David and Zoe did and use the Town Hall as the starting point for a much bigger day across London.

And from a photography point of view, I love that movement.

The photographs don't all have to look like they were taken at the same venue.

You can have the architecture of the Town Hall, portraits through the streets of Islington, relaxed photographs during lunch and then the atmosphere of a London evening reception.

It creates a wedding gallery with a real sense of place.

Relaxed Documentary Wedding Photography in London

David and Zoe's wedding was a perfect example of why I love photographing weddings in London.

A black tie ceremony at Islington Town Hall, a walk through Islington for portraits, an afternoon at Frederick's and an evening celebration at 1 Lombard Street.

Different locations, different parts of the day and lots of opportunities for the photographs to change with them.

My approach is relaxed and documentary, with an editorial influence. I want to photograph the big moments, but also everything happening around them.

The people, the atmosphere, the movement and the moments you didn't realise were happening until you see them in your gallery.

If you're planning an Islington Town Hall wedding or another London Town Hall wedding, I'd love to hear what you're planning.
